Coalition of Frontline Communities to Highlight Local Climate Leaders Before Earth Day

Frontline communities will gather virtually and in-person at Columbia City Theater in South Seattle for a week of environmental and climate justice programming called "Earth Deserves More Than a Day.” Events run from Monday, April 17 through Friday, April 21.

Front and Centered —a statewide coalition of communities of color, Indigenous peoples, and people with lower incomes—is hosting #EarthDeservesMore in partnership with Columbia City Theater, Rainier Avenue Radio, and the Social Justice Film Institute. The unique week-long event includes documentary films, video shorts, radio interviews, kitchen table panels, an educational gallery walk open to the public, and special programming highlighting youth organizers in the area. The week will culminate with a showing of The Doctrine of Recovery, a powerful film where Indigenous women explore the devastating impacts of the discovery doctrine that the Vatican recently repudiated.

“Caring for the Earth requires more than just one day of attention and work, and our members are out there doing that work every day,” said Rebecca Rosado, Front and Centered’s membership lead. “That’s why we’re excited to showcase climate leaders not just in South Seattle but in other parts of Washington State, in Native Nations, and beyond.”

The week of programming follows Front and Centered’s inaugural #EarthDeservesMore event in 2021, an entirely virtual three-day convening. All radio interviews, conversations, and film showings will be broadcast live via Rainier Avenue Radio’s Twitch, YouTube, and other social media accounts, except for The Doctrine of Discovery which will only be shown at Columbia City Theater.
